More than twenty-five years after the first CableNut went up on a free web host, cablenut.com has a new look. Same jack-in-the-box, same freeware promise, and a lot more history.
What’s new
- A modern, dark design that works on phones, built to feel at home next to an old Windows 2000 screenshot.
- Rebuilt documentation. Every setting in both Adjusters, Windows 2000/XP and Windows 98/ME, now has its own card with type, default, range and tips.
- A proper download page with all the working mirrors and install notes.
- Version history from the first 2000 releases to the final 4.08 release, with links to older installers preserved by the Internet Archive.
- Stories: TechTV, PC Magazine, the 2001 benchmark, and life on the broadband forums.
- Articles from the archive. Rick’s original 2001 write-ups on MTU and MSS, Windows 98 tweaking, and a very serious Winamp vs Sonique showdown are back online.
A note for 2026
CableNut 4.08 was built for Windows 95 through XP. Modern Windows tunes TCP on its own, so please keep CableNut on retro machines and virtual machines. If you’re building a Windows 98 or XP box, though, it’s still one of the best ways to get the most out of a period-correct connection.
