The story of CableNut

CableNut started in 2000, when cable modems and DSL were new and Windows’ default network settings were tuned for dial-up. People on broadband were getting a fraction of the speed they paid for. The fix was buried in obscure registry entries.

It began as a set of downloadable registry patches for Windows 98 and 2000, posted by Rick under the name “Cablenut”. Rick worked alongside Dannjr, who wrote his own cable and DSL patches. After the site’s first host shut down in January 2001, it moved to web space provided by teammate JonG. Jon built the CableNut Adjuster, the graphical program that turned a set of patches into a real tool.

Version 3.5 (January 2001) added tuned settings for DSL, 56K modems and fast cable connections. Version 4.0 brought the full Adjuster, with direct control over almost every TCP/IP and AFD setting Windows exposed. It also introduced CableNut Custom Setting (CCS) files, which users could save, share and swap. Version 4.08, released October 26, 2001, was the final release. It supports Windows 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000 and XP, plus Cable, DSL, Satellite and Dialup connections.

CableNut was always freeware, with no ads, time limits or nag screens. It was featured by Lockergnome and passed 100,000 downloads, and a community add-on pack grew to more than 60 CCS files. In 2006 Softpedia certified it “100% Clean”, free of any malware. On forums like SpeedGuide and Whirlpool, it was the tool people recommended for going beyond basic tweaks.

Modern Windows now tunes TCP automatically, so CableNut’s job is done. It’s kept here for retro-PC builders, Windows XP enthusiasts and anyone curious about how broadband tuning worked in the early 2000s.
